It’s the first of its kind anywhere in the world and it’s happening in Auburn, Alabama. The Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center, on the corner of College Street and Thach, is changing the landscape not only of Auburn but the Hospitality Industry as a whole. Join us for an inside look at 1856. The Rane Culinary Science Center’s 1856 is an upscale teaching restaurant, giving students hands-on experience in both the front and back of house roles, while guests enjoy a beautiful view of Samford Hall along with exquisite tasting menus.
Hey Day Market Food Hall to Debut at Auburn University
Hey Day Market’s central location, across from Auburn University’s iconic Samford Hall, will be easily accessible to students as well as to members of the local and business communities, visitors, shoppers, and alumni returning to campus. The food hall will be a welcome addition to Auburn students and will focus on creative and moderately priced meals.
Applications are now available for vendors interested in joining the market’s opening tenant line-up. Eight food stalls offering a variety of cuisines will line the perimeter of the hall along with a bar and one space reserved for a student-led incubator concept. The Market’s design will feature an industrial look, with stained concrete floors and doors that open to a large green space for additional seating. Ithaka Hospitality Partners, LLC will manage Hey Day Market on behalf of Auburn University. (MORE)
Auburn’s Rane Center Featured in Southern Living
The Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center is part of a feature article in the August 2021 issue of Southern Living magazine.
Writer Tara Massouleh McCay connects the growing food scene in the city of Auburn to the creation of the one-of-a-kind culinary center, slated to open in fall 2022, and deems Auburn a “culinary powerhouse.”
The dream and vision for a culinary science center at Auburn started more than a decade ago when then-Dean June Henton tasked Martin O’Neill, head of the college’s Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management, and Hans van der Reijden, managing director of The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center, to visit globally recognized programs and facilities to benchmark the center’s development. Auburn’s College of Human Sciences marks construction milestone for Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center
The last construction beam for the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center at Auburn University was raised Friday, marking a seminal point in the building of the world-class facility.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey attended the event, noting that the structure will not only benefit tourism and hospitality industries in Alabama, but “definitely put us on the map worldwide.”
“The bottom line is this center will train future generations in the hospitality industry in first-class style,” she added. “It will be a credit to future generations and give lots of young folks opportunities that they never would have had.” (MORE)

As construction of the new Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center continues, the College of Human Sciences at Auburn University has announced the dedicative naming of key parts of the center in recognition of generous gifts from the Tom Lowder family, alumni and friends.
The Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center, coming spring 2022, will be a first-of-its-kind educational and commercial hub for students in Alabama’s only professionally accredited hospitality program to hone their hospitality, event management, brewing and culinary skills. Across all disciplines, the Rane Center will be equipped with innovative technology, active learning centers and real-world opportunities that will prepare Auburn graduates for the competitive career market. Auburn University Board of Trustees honors Rane, family for commitment to new culinary science center.
James W. “Jimmy” Rane and the Rane family were recognized at the Sept. 15 meeting of the Auburn University Board of Trustees for their $12 million commitment to building a Culinary Science Center on campus.
The board in April approved the naming of the facility as the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center in honor of Rane’s parents. (MORE)
Auburn breaks ground on Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center.
Auburn University celebrated the construction of a culinary science center unlike any other in the world with a ceremonial groundbreaking on April 12.
“The Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center is a symbolic representation of Auburn’s future,” said Auburn University President Steven Leath, “a future that is globally focused, service oriented and shapes the next generation of industry leaders.”
The 142,000-square-foot structure is distinct as it will blend an innovative learning environment with a luxury boutique hotel and restaurant. No other facility has a teaching hotel, teaching restaurant, a range of classrooms, demonstration and food production laboratories, a food hall, wine appreciation center, distilled spirits center and brewing science lab under one roof.
